Food Assistance Programme – Distribution In Kashmir, India – 2026

In 2026, Care World had the privilege of delivering critical food assistance to underprivileged families across the Kashmir Division in India. With the generous support of our valued funding partner, we successfully distributed 3,415 food packs to vulnerable households, helping to ease the burden of food insecurity and financial hardship.

Across many parts of Kashmir, families continue to face significant economic challenges. Limited employment opportunities, rising living costs, and seasonal disruptions often leave low-income households struggling to secure even the most basic daily necessities. For many, access to sufficient and nutritious food remains a constant concern.

In this context, the Food Assistance Programme was designed as a timely and impactful intervention—ensuring that vulnerable families received essential food supplies to sustain themselves with dignity. More than just a distribution effort, the programme aimed to restore a sense of security and relief to households facing uncertainty.

Your Impact

This programme would not have been possible without the support of compassionate donors. Your contributions played a direct and meaningful role in transforming lives.

Through this initiative, we were able to:

Support thousands of individuals across multiple districts
Provide families with essential food supplies for daily survival
Reduce the immediate financial strain on vulnerable households
Enable families to redirect limited resources towards healthcare, education, and other pressing needs
Promote dignity by ensuring access to culturally appropriate and nutritious food

Each food pack distributed represented more than just a set of items—it symbolised hope, solidarity, and care.

Geographical Reach

The food distribution programme was implemented across key districts in the Kashmir Valley, with a focus on communities most in need:

Srinagar

As the capital city, Srinagar has densely populated areas where many families live under challenging economic conditions. The programme targeted low-income households, particularly those with irregular sources of income. Food packs distributed here provided crucial support to families struggling to meet daily needs.

Budgam

In Budgam, the focus was on remote and underserved villages where access to markets and essential services is often limited. Many families in these areas rely on seasonal or informal work, making them especially vulnerable to food insecurity. The intervention helped bridge critical gaps for these households.

Baramulla

Baramulla, known for its resilient communities, also faces pockets of economic hardship. The programme reached families who were struggling to cope with rising costs and limited income opportunities. The distribution brought much-needed relief and stability to these households.

Bandipora

In the northern district of Bandipora, geographical isolation presents additional challenges for many communities. Our team worked diligently to ensure that even hard-to-reach areas were included, ensuring equitable access to assistance.

Across all districts, transparent beneficiary selection processes and community engagement ensured that support reached those who needed it most.

What Each Food Pack Provided

Each food pack was carefully designed to meet the basic dietary and nutritional needs of a family. The selection of items was based on local consumption patterns, ensuring that the assistance was both practical and culturally appropriate.

Each pack included:

Flour – A staple food essential for daily meals
Cooking Oil – Necessary for food preparation and caloric intake
Pulses (lentils and beans) – A key source of protein
Sugar – An important household essential
Dates – Nutritious and energy-rich, especially valued during times of need
Tea – A daily necessity in Kashmiri households
Salt – A basic but essential ingredient
Dalia (cracked wheat) – A nutritious and versatile food item

Together, these items helped ensure that families had access to balanced and sufficient food for a meaningful period.

Stories from the Field

Behind every number is a story. The impact of this programme is best understood through the experiences of those it reached.

A Mother’s Struggle – Budgam

In a small village in Budgam, a widowed mother of three had been struggling to provide for her children after losing her husband. With no stable source of income, she often relied on the kindness of neighbours. Receiving a food pack brought immediate relief. For the first time in weeks, she was able to prepare meals for her children without anxiety. She shared that the support gave her not just food, but peace of mind.

An Elderly Couple – Baramulla

An elderly couple living alone in Baramulla faced daily challenges due to age and lack of family support. Their limited savings made it difficult to afford basic groceries. The food assistance they received reduced their immediate worries and allowed them to manage their limited resources more effectively. They expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying the support reminded them that they were not forgotten.

A Daily Wage Worker – Srinagar

A daily wage labourer in Srinagar, supporting a family of five, often faced uncertainty due to irregular work opportunities. During periods without income, putting food on the table became a serious challenge. The food pack helped bridge this critical gap, ensuring his family could continue to eat while he searched for work. It allowed him to focus on rebuilding his livelihood without the constant stress of food insecurity.

Commitment to Transparency and Dignity

At Care World, we are committed to ensuring that all assistance is delivered with integrity, transparency, and respect for human dignity. Beneficiaries were identified through community consultations and needs assessments, prioritising widows, elderly individuals, daily wage earners, and families with limited or no stable income.

Distribution processes were carefully managed to ensure fairness, avoid duplication, and maintain accountability at every stage. Our field teams worked closely with local communities to ensure smooth implementation and maximum impact.

Looking Ahead

While the Food Assistance Programme has made a significant difference, the need remains ongoing. Many families continue to face economic uncertainty and food insecurity. Sustained support is essential to build resilience and improve long-term well-being.

With continued donor support, Care World aims to expand its reach, strengthen its programmes, and support even more families in need across the region.

A Shared Mission

This initiative is a testament to what can be achieved through compassion and collaboration. Every donation—no matter the size—contributes directly to feeding families, restoring dignity, and bringing hope to those who need it most.

Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference.
